In the last few years, there has been increasing attention paid to virtual research infrastructures by both universities and grant awarding institutions like the National Science Foundation (NSF). For example, a recent call for proposals by the NSF includes virtual infrastructures. A virtual research infrastructure is one that exists primarily on the web, as opposed to a brick and mortar infrastructure, i.e., a physics or chemistry lab.

Virtual research infrastructures will have a significant impact on the world of research due to their favorable cost comparisons with their brick and mortar counterparts. In addition, they can scale up to serve many more people, whereas a physical facility is limited to a small number of people based on physical space restrictions. In fact, it strikes me that MyNetResearch.com can be used as a platform for a virtual research infrastructures that would likely cost thousands of dollars vs. hundreds of thousands it would cost to build or refurbish a research center.

Are there any limitations or other advantages of virtual research infrastructures that come to mind? Do you think the idea will spread?

Virtual research infrastructures (VRIs) are inevitable in my view. They will do for the research world what Amazon did for the bookstore industry and Expedia and Travelocity did for the travel industry. They are inevitable because of the cost and scalability arguments and being able to replicate much of the physical research enterprise virtually.

It has to be clear though, what VRIs can and cannot do. In the hard sciences, where chemicals must be mixed and material strength tested, VRIs may be limited in their applicability. However, even that may be overcome in the future. I foresee that in the future, one physical lab may serve multiple VRIs. Bacteria may be cultured from multiple institutions at one physical location. Physical prototypes may be created and tested at one lab from many VRIs.

In addition, simulation may make some physical facilities unnecessary. For example, the 787 (Dreamliner) and other modern aircraft are designed in large part, on the computer. Likewise, many cars today are designed and even crash-tested via simulation software. So the future would seem bright for VRIs.

What do you think?

It is interesting to see this topic being discussed on our forum. However, I'm gratified to see that jallen views MyNetResearch.com as having the potential to provide a virtual research infrastructure (VRI) for universities and corporations alike.

We have been thinking about this for a while and are actually working to develop a VRI with an educational institution. We believe that it will raise the level of institutional research productivity to a whole new level. This is the place that every university will want to be, actually, have to be, in the next few years.

Just like online classes, online research is inevitable. However, unlike online classes, online research must be global to reap the benefits i.e., there must be a global research 'cloud' that each institution can connect to. We say that cloud is MyNetResearch. However, each institution can have its own localized cloud for their university, to keep certain sections private.

So our vision is many "private-label" MyNetResearch clouds all connected to the big MyNetResearch cloud. Local and global communities.
