Here is a link to some great resources describing journalistic trends. One of the major changes in journalism was demonstrated by TMZ breaking the story about Michael Jackson's death before any of the big news organizations like Reuters, CBS, NBC and so on.

This shows that journalism and reporting is no longer the preserve of traditional journalists and big players in the publishing industry. Traditional journalists are being complemented by "citizen journalists" as was evidenced in the recent street demonstrations in Iran.

In addition, large newspapers are in terminal decline as more people get their news and opinions on the web. The past few years have seen many newspapers go bankrupt, such as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the New York Tribune.

Overall ad sales for print fell 30 percent in this first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter last year, according to Business Insider. Classified ad revenue also fell 42 percent in that period. Much of the ad revenue is going to eBay, Craigslist, Angieslist, Kijiji and other sites. This revenue will never return.

Did I miss any trends, anyone?

News aggregation is probably the biggest blow newspapers have taken in recent years. Going to Google News or Yahoo News, news from all over the world is pulled in from multiple sources and presented directly to the user. The user can drill down into individual stories, find stories by selected keywords, and even have stories "pushed' out to him or him using RSS feeds.

It is difficult for traditional news outfits to charge for news or to make the same kind of money they did with print copy. Their industry has changed and will never be the same. Knowledge individuals can easily put up blogs or websites with news analyses and be somewhat competitive with the newspaper sites in niches areas. These have had profound negative impacts on reporting and journalism.
