It is devotion. This is an initiative towards interaction with self; more than communication with surroundings. Keep yourself in touch with relations, but listen more to self.

Be ethical. The world of academia is small, and the word gets around soon enough!

Remember the 80/20 rule. What you hear about the disseratation process is only 20%. Be observant

Thatz a nice discussion..
One learns a lot n his/her Ph.D life starting 4m how u handle persons/things in a efficient manner, learning to do things you've never done/thought of doing in your life before, writing for grants along with ur supervisor and most of all publishing your work in a good impact journal and so on..

I feel that one needs lots and lots of patience, dedication to do all the above listed.

There are times when people disappoint you and let you down. But those are the times when you must remind yourself To trust your own judgments and opinions, To keep your life focused on believing in yourself.

Never break four things in our life, Trust, Relation, Promise and Heart, because when they break, they don't make noise, but pains a lot.......d'oh!

Above all, think that Let me give so much time to the improvement of myself
That I shall have no time to criticize othersSilenced

Hi,
To start with Ph.D, first conduct a thorough review of existing literature. This will help in identifying the research gap.

Understand that there is a lot of tacit knowledge surrounding the PhD (vs. formal, coded knowledge)~ about professors, about the process, about resources, and about pitfalls. Be aware of this and constantly try to learn by asking experts and observing those around you, especially students at a more advanced stage.

Don't be tempted by opportunities for money that may come up. Your wife or husband will definitely nag but just focus. Your friends may not understand what you are doing and may complain you don't have time for them anymore .Explain to them what you are doing but some may not understand. Don't just mind their comments.

Remember that a research notebook can be anything you want it to be. The obvious thing is a record of results of your work, but it can also serve as a way of constructively 'talking to yourself'. Every Friday afternoon I used to hide away somewhere quiet and write down exactly where I'd got to on each topic I was investigating, and use the notebook (>15 volumes eventually!) to record what I intended to do next in each case, speculating on possible outcomes. The following week I'd read this and use it as a sequence of prompts for the latest entries. A week can completely change your perspective! Think I found this helpful even post-doc.

Rule 1: Purpose
Rule 2: Focus
Any problems, refer to rule 1.

Be wise about who you select for your dissertation advisory committee. It is not always best to pick people on the basis of how famous they are.

Instead, realize that the role of the advisory committee is to advise and help you, thus you want faculty who have your interests at heart and will mentor you through the process.
