Anyone have good ways of handling team issues especially slackers in teams?

The best way I've found is to hold a meeting with the teams and they tell me the division of duties between members. I meet with them again (once or twice) later and each individual gives me their individual (not group) progress reports. This holds slackers' feet to the fire. If they crash and burn, they don't take down the rest of the group. It's only fair.
Any better approaches out there?
