I believe it depends. It is given as a sample for the purposes of determining class use. If that is the reason it is being ordered. fine. The owner of the book (the instructor) can do whatever they like afterward. If it is being ordered to resell, that is clearly unethical. Like charitable contributions on the tax form, the truth is in the heart of the person reporting.

Has anyone noticed the resale value has dropped? I had a extra copy which one of the buyers wanted. He told me it was worth $5. Mind you this was a 2009 book, and retail was $140! He said since the 2010 was already out (this was in mid 2009) the value had dropped. He was still to eager to buy it. Of course I did not sell it. I typically give these books to students who have financial issues
